Kinetic Sand

Kinetic Sand is a free, NQF-aligned Sensory & Messy Play activity for ages 5 to 12. It includes a learning intention, a materials list, step-by-step instructions and framework links.

Learning intention

This experience supports children to explore materials through their senses and to investigate how a mixture behaves.

You'll need

• 6 cups sand
• 1½ cups corn flour
• 2 tsp dishwashing liquid
• ¾ cup water
• Food dye (optional)

How to do it

1. Combine the sand and corn flour and mix until even.
2. In a separate cup, mix the dishwashing liquid, water and dye.
3. Pour the liquid into the sand mixture and combine until mouldable.
4. Children shape, cut and squeeze the sand, which holds its form then crumbles.
