Make-Your-Own Instruments is a free, NQF-aligned Music, Drama & Dance activity for ages 5 to 12. It includes a learning intention, a materials list, step-by-step instructions and framework links.

Learning intention

This experience supports children to express ideas through media and to reuse materials with respect for the environment.

You'll need

• Recycled containers
• Rice or beans (for shakers)
• Rubber bands
• Tape and decorations

How to do it

1. Talk about how different instruments make sound.
2. Children build shakers, string instruments or drums from recycled materials.
3. Decorate the instruments.
4. Form a band and play a rhythm together as a group.
